Worship Times: Worship begins at 11:00 am on Sunday morning.

Plan a Visit: Located at 518 Pike Road, not far from the intersection of Harry Wurzbach Rd and Loop 410 (northeast San Antonio), we gather each week for worship, fellowship, and growth in faith.

Child care is provided in the nursery during worship.

What We Believe: We believe the good news that God loves each and every one of us, and that in Jesus Christ, God has demonstrated divine grace and love offered to us all. We are called to share that love and grace with others, both inside and outside the church.

Jon began as Pastor of Northwood in July of 2021.  A native of San Antonio, Jon attended seminary at the Wake Forest University School of Divinity. Before coming to Northwood, Jon served as the Associate Pastor for Youth for Highland Presbyterian Church in Winston Salem, North Carolina, and as Pastor for St. James Presbyterian in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Jon and his wife have two children. 

Jon is passionate about helping people bridge the gap between faith and real life, so that they can not only observe, but experience and apply God’s love in a beautiful and hurting world. Along with his work at the church, Jon enjoys spending time with his family, exploring outdoors, water skiing, sand volleyball, and playing guitar. He is also quite happy to be back in Spurs country. 

Jon is active in Mission Presbytery and currently serves on the Committee on Ministry. He also  serves as an executive coach for clergy and others who are seeking to grow or working through a particular challenge.

Ebonee Hughes

Owen duggan, director of music

Owen Duggan has served as music director at Northwood since 2015 and holds teaching positions at San Antonio Academy and Our Lady of the Lake University. He is also an active, published composer of sacred music and a singer-songwriter in children’s and country music. 

Owen especially enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his two teenage children Donny and Molly, and his cat, Moose.

Rebecca cranfill, day school director

Rebecca has served as an early childhood director for 27+ years. She holds an unexpiring license in Texas - the highest director credential in the state. Three schools Rebecca directed were awarded state and national accreditation. Northwood holds the highest state accreditation offered in Texas (Four Star accreditation, Texas Rising Star). She began as dayschool director at Northwood in August of 2015.

Rebecca has been married for 32 years and has two adult daughters and one beautiful granddaughter, all in Tennessee.

Church Leadership: 12 Church elders in three classes provided spiritual nurture, direction, and care for our family of faith.  The elders, along with the pastor, meet monthly to discuss concerns, discern God’s direction for the church, and determine church discipline when needed.  Four elders (women and men of good faith) are elected each year to serve a three year term.

Piano Accompanist Job Description

Position: Salaried 

The Accompanist will be a salaried employee hired by the Session of the Church and will work under the Pastor and Director of Music to provide keyboard accompaniment and hymn leadership for the choir and congregation, and select and provide liturgically appropriate keyboard music for worship services and special events. A strong work ethic combined with a collegial and cooperative spirit and proactive attitude will be essential for overall success in this position.

Minimum qualifications:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in music (piano major or concentration) or equivalent professional experience

  2. Experience in choral and instrumental accompanying

  3. Strong sight-reading skills, including closed and open choral scores, and lead sheets (chordal reading/improvisation)

  4. Familiarity and ease with diverse styles including folk and contemporary worship music

Typical service and rehearsals times:

  1. Sunday services at 11 AM, call 9:45; average hours: 2.5

  2. Wednesday choir rehearsals at 6:30, call 6:20; average hours: 1.5

  3. Seasonal services: Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Christmas Eve, Advent Christmas Celebration Dinner, Blue Christmas service.

Special services as necessary:

  1. Funerals/memorials, and weddings

  2. Other events as planned/needed, when the accompanist is available

Compensation:

Salary commensurate with experience. Current special service rate for a wedding is $250 and for a funeral/memorial is $200. Both are guaranteed by the church. Events beyond our traditional and listed seasonal services will pay at the rate of $80 per hour.

Other Benefits:

Four Sundays off in consultation with the Director of Music. In addition, typically the choir does not rehearse for one month in the summer so there is no rehearsal required during that time.

The Piano Accompanist will have access to church pianos (and organ if applicable) for private instruction, rehearsals, and studio recitals, provided there is no conflict with the church calendar. 

It is requested the Piano Accompanist provide assistance in finding an appropriate substitute for Sundays when they are not playing.
