Northwood Presbyterian Church is a mission focused church and seeks to provide opportunities for members and friends to be involved in mission nationally and internationally.
Service Opportunities
Beginning in 1989, Northwood Presbyterian Church has sponsored annual Mission Trips for members and friends of all ages. Many of the trips have been in cooperation with the Presbyterian Border Ministries, seeking to build relationships with the Presbyterian Church in Mexico. We have also gone to Heifer International in Arkansas, Foothills Presbytery in South Carolina, and locally to the House of Neighborly Service in San Antonio.
In July 2005, 12 of our members, ranging in age from 11 to 80, traveled to Santa Catarina, Mexico, near Monterrey. We worked alongside Mexican Presbyterians at La Iglesia Nuevo Jerusalem, building pews, storage shelves for their music department, and an enclosure for a hot water heater. In our free time, we toured the area with members from the church and the youth ministry. Click the thumbnails below to view photos from this trip.
In March 2006, we traveled to Beaumont, Texas, to assist in home renovation for victims of Hurricane Rita.
Then, in July 2006, 2007 and 2008, we joined the Eben-Ezer Presbyterian Church of Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico in a mission partnership. The two churches have pledged to work together in mission over the next several years.
Northwood has been involved with the San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries Shelter for the homeless for decades. Currently, a group visits the Shelter once every two months for evening check-in. We also provide a short worship service and fellowship time for residents.
House of Neighborly Service
Northwood Church actively supports San Antonio's House of Neighborly Service, a Presbyterian sponsored facility on the near west-side. At HNS, local residents take classes and receive information on assistance.
Habitat for Humanity
Northwood participates annually in a San Antonio area Presbyterian Cluster Build, joining with several other local Presbyterian churches to build a house.
South Texas Blood & Tissue Center
Northwood sponsors quarterly blood drives at the church to provide blood supplies to the San Antonio area. Our Blood Drives are held on Sunday mornings before and after the worship service. If you're not sure if you're eligible to donate, don't assume, just ask!
Alternative Gift Market
Annually, Northwood sponsors an Alternative Gift Market, providing mission-conscious gift giving opportunities. In addition to financial gifts available through Alternative Gifts International (AGI), we provide gift giving opportunities in San Antonio, and sell crafts that benefit artisans in third world countries.
Other Mission Opportunities
In addition to Northwood's offerings, the Presbyterian Church provides many Mission opportunities at all levels:
